2023-2024
Realized during the Caspar David Friedrich Fellowship, with graphic design by Marco Loi.
Exhibitions: 05/07-07/07/2024 - DIA Hochschule Wismar, DE
You+ explores biometric data; numbers that describe the human body and make it readable for machines. In many commercial uses of biometric data, like fitness trackers, beauty filters, or period apps, companies interpret this data for their users. They take power over the users‘ experience, often manipulating their users‘ behavior for financial profit
The research question for this project was to create open-ended interactions with biometric data, that emphasize creativity, exploration, and true gamefulness. The idea was to explore the potential of biometric data to invite users to engage with machines in embodied ways, placing their physicality at the center.
The research culminated in an artistic installation, temporarily bypassing the rules of a data-hungry economy. In a three-station parkour, visitors encounter unconventional biometric data trackers encouraging playful and confident interaction. Throughout the exhibition, visitors‘ data is displayed in real-time on screens. In the morning, the visuals start as a clear and simple dashboard of the visitors‘ information. With every collected data point the display becomes more distorted and the dashboard is increasingly overlaid by a visual animation that reflects the fragmentation of bodies by their data.
